“Trees On a Wire” meets CBC’s Daybreak North radio show

As a coda to 2020, this true face-puncher of a year, I’ll leave you one of my warmest December memories: this link to a segment of CBC’s Daybreak North where my chamber orchestra piece “Trees On a Wire” and I made an appearance.

Click here to listen to the CBC segment (about 6 minutes) where I talk about halibut, the fungal internet, trees, the climate emergency, and interconnectedness.

I spoke with CBC host Carolina de Ryk about Haida Gwaii-wide halibut gifts from Old Massett and the Gwaii Trust Society – gifts of local seafood that fed every household in Haida Gwaii.

While I had nothing to do with the gift itself, I was a grateful recipient. (Carla Lutner of Gwaii Trust Society explains how this all happened.) I’m grateful to have had the chance to spread this story, speak about why it was so inspiring, and introduce my music to listeners.

The ensemble you’ll hear is the Problematic Orchestra located in Whitehorse, Yukon, led by Daniel Janke. Enjoy the full recording below.

What’s coming in 2021?

On the heels of this story and the release of “Lo, How a Bleak Midwinter” for solo piano, I’m feeling some momentum and, crucially, some decent health and energy. If that energy trend holds up I expect to release a piano album in the spring. More news on that in January.

Until then, Happy New Year, and thanks for your support.
