Photos from rainforest field recording locations

Forests are perpetual change

Fiddleheads sprout from soil mixed with last season's mulch, cedar and hemlock grow on fallen logs, and incoming birds nest alongside resident ravens and eagles.

Surrounded by this surreal scene from Walden, I sat down in my studio to write piano music - maybe even begin to record an EP. From here, I can hear birds chattering constantly in the woods. My curiosity often leads me to hiking.

The more walking I did, the more I felt I needed to share some of the sounds I found.

Not many city dwellers hear high-fidelity nature noise on a regular basis. Not even in verdant Vancouver, where I lived before moving to Haida Gwaii this year. It's been a big change.

So I've been recording the rainforest - this threatened, fragile, coastal rainforest in northwest Canada - to preserve a little bit of this new adventure. To learn something new from something old. To see what might happen if I orchestrated a piano piece with field recordings, my voice, and a bit of improv.

Press play and you'll hear the birds that were audible from my studio doorway one evening. A nearby brook, and a rainy afternoon at the Tlell River.

Where is all this going?

This labyrinth has a single path. You can't get lost, but each walk is new.
