My SATB “Ar Hyd y Nos” arrangement goes to Wales

Here’s a fun bit of news to kick off the year: My choral arrangement of the Welsh carol “Ar Hyd y Nos (All Through the Night)” will be performed as part of the Welsh National Opera’s community choir project this spring.

Ar Hyd y Nos is a Welsh tune dating back to the 1700s; Haydn made a two-voice, accompanied arrangement sometime around the turn of the 19th century. My arrangement from 2014 was commissioned by music director Brian Wismath and Vox Humana Chamber Choir in Victoria, BC, Canada for their annual A Child’s Christmas in Wales production. It’s on the choir’s album of the same name, along with Suo Gân (Lullaby), another arrangement of mine.

Here’s a live recording by Vox Humana:

This is the Wales Millennium Centre (Canolfan Mileniwm Cymru) in Cardiff, a spectacular concert hall. I haven’t yet been to Wales but this place would be on my travel list.

Welsh National Opera’s South Community Choir will sing Ar Hyd y Nos among other choral pieces on Sunday, March 29, 2020 at 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm, in the foyer areas and the Weston Studio.
